Violet's 8 puppies are here

Surprise! Mostly brown pups with 4 pie bald, one Irish marked. and three with tuxedo markings.
Who knew Violet carried brown? Her Great Great Great grandmother Velvet is on both sides
of the pedigree and she is the only source of brown. Who would think it could hide for 4 generations?
The puppies were all between 11 and 13 ounces, pretty big for a little girl like Violet! We hope some
of them will share their mom's talent for water work.

Here is Chase, GCH Kimlyn's Catch a Dream, who is the stud I have chosen for Lilly (CH Blue Run's Red Robin) who will be bred on her next heat. This very balanced handsome boy looks like just the ticket for a beautiful litter with Lilly. He has an absolutely marvelous chest. I liked everything about him! This will be another line breeding on the fabulous CH Watermark Toby's Black Jack who is both Lilly's grandfather and Chase's father.

Blue Run has THREE new Champions!

Pictured above are Champion Blue Run's Red Sky Delight (Violet), CH Blue Run's Black Jack (Shamu), and CH Blue Run's Red Robin (Lilly). These three are all off spring of Blue Run's Right on Red mated to CH Watermark Toby's Black Jack (Jack) and CH EbbTide's Poetry in Motion (Dickens). In the middle photo,
Shamu is given a group placement out of the classes with the judge commenting "This is the nicest head I've ever seen on a Portie".

Violet and Fix

Last week, stud owner Barbie Buchheit and dam owner Kelley Dimke drove 1200 miles each to accomplish a mating between Violet (CH Blue Run's Red Sky Delight) and Fix (CH Aarion's Delorean of Deblon) who is the handsome brown boy pictured. It was too hot to ship semen and these two determined individuals were determined to get the job done right! We are looking for a colorful (lots of white on chest and paws) litter out of these two dogs. The litter would arrive just after Labor Day and we will be doing the whelp in North Carolina where Kelley lives. I have already been accepting deposits on this litter as the Amber / Rider litter was small with only four surviving the whelp. (The babies are 4 days old and what they
lack in quantity they make up for in quality.)

If you live near me (Washington D.C area) or Kelley (Charlotte, North Carolina) you may want to apply for a puppy from the Violet/Fix litter. You can contact me using the link at the right of the blog page or by e-mail at drcwinchell@gmail.com or Kelley at  kelleycatamount@gmail.com.

Amber's puppies are here

Today Amber delivered four lovely puppies. There are two girls and two boys. One of the girls is
curly and each puppy has some white on paws or chest. This was a long and difficult whelp but we
are looking forward to the fun of watching these little ones grow. They weigh between 11 and 16
ounces and are robustly nursing. Amber is sleeping and soon I will be, too.

Definitely Expecting

I used to do sonograms to confirm pregnancy. Now, I just wait until week number five. It's like
watching a zucchini in your garden. One day there is nothing to see, the next day you have a big
fat zucchini ready to be picked. Amber has gone from svelte to definitely pregnant in the last few
days. Of course, I can't tell how many puppies but sonograms are notoriously inaccurate because
of the dog's anatomy which precludes examining the full extent of the uterine horns under the rib
cage. So we wait to see. Rider is already ordering his cigars to hand out. I am interviewing
prospective owners and accepting deposits on the litter.

Rider, on the left, and Amber, right, spent a week together "cannoodling". We hope to have a nice big litter as a result of their joyful efforts. Puppies should look like the parents. No browns. Just wavy black or black and white pups with an occasional curly puppy. Amber's previous litters were above average in size (nine pups) so
I hope to have 9 happy families at the end of the summer when the puppies go to their new homes. They do look compatible, don't they?

Amber and Rider are expecting....we hope!

CH Ebb Tide's Two if by Sea, RN, RA,CGC (Rider) and CH Blue Run's She's a Caution, CGC (Amber) are expecting a beautiful litter on July 9th, 2012. This is a line breeding on their grandfather, BISS CH Watermark Toby's Black Jack. Rider is pictured above. This breeding was only possible with the kind assistance of stud owner Lesley West who supervised their enthusiastic attempts to get together and get the job done. We are pretty confident they were successful and they had a great time. As Lesley said, "Rider is in love."

SHAMU!!

Here is the handsome 2 year old Shamu, starting his show career, and winning his class each of 4 days showing. Shamu has passed all of his health clearances and is a proven stud, having sired a litter last fall. He is 22.25 inches tall and 60 pounds. Yes,
he's a whale of a dog!

Thanksgiving Litter Update

The 9 Thanksgiving puppies are 5 weeks old now
and are receiving regular visits from their prospective
families. A puppy from a litter born to one of my girls
in Phoenix was placed in the Washington D.C. area at
Christmas. A bruiser weighing in at 12.5 pounds at 7 weeks,
he is 18 days older than the Thanksgiving litter. I'm
looking for one last owner for the current litter and then
won't have puppies again until the spring at the earliest.

The Thanksgiving Litter has arrived.

Joy delivered 9 beautiful black wavy puppies on November 18th. She
produced 8 in just two hours and then a surprise 9th puppy came a
few hours later. This was a wonderful whelp with uniform puppy size
and none that were hard to get going except the last puppy that needed
a little oxygen to pink up. We have 5 girls and 4 boys. Some look like
mom and some like their dad with a bit of white on chest and paws. Joy
is turning out to be a conscientious and attentive mom with abundant
milk to go around for this large litter.

Joy is due to whelp this week.

Big as a little black barrel, Joy is due to have her puppies
on Thursday. As always, this is an exciting and anxious time
for any breeder. I recently attended Myrna Savant-Harris's
seminar on puppy intensive care. Hopefully, being well prepared
for every emergency will preclude there being any problems.
My girls have always been great whelpers and excellent moms.
Tomorrow I set up the whelping pen.
